Anyone having any success with the various Fujitsu utilities under Windows 7 on a P7230? I'm doing a test install with very little luck: - fingerprint reader installs but doesn't appear as a biometric device - powersave utility doesn't control any devices (just brightness which Win7 already does) - hotkey "mute" function not working (other functions ok)
These are the only ones I care about, and none does anything useful. And before you ask, yes, I installed the FUJ02B1 and FUJ02E3 drivers and the system extension utility. There are no unrecognized devices.
Win7 runs great otherwise, so it's frustrating that Fujitsu hasn't bothered to update their support utilities. Anyone have better luck?

Hmm, partial success.
- the "mute" function started to work, mysteriously. - I tossed Fujitsu's updated-for-Win7 powersaving utility and installed their original one, works great on all devices.
Fingerprint reader still fails to offer any biometrics function. The "scroll" feature is visible, big whoop. I disable this because it sucks power (and is useless).
I installed the Fujitsu-supplied Ricoh Vista drivers. Win7 installed a generic SD card driver for the media slot, and didn't support the memory stick function at all. It did have a Ricoh xD slot driver, but the Fujitsu one was newer.
More news later, I hope!

Success. I'm upgrading.
Authentec's beta fingerprint suite works well (http://www.authentec.com/win7beta32.cfm).
Fujitsu could make this a lot easier. This isn't my expected support experience from them.

I Just installed an optional Windows 7 update from AuthenTec. It adds a completely new (localized) wizard and FINALLY! resolves the reader not working after sleep mode (when lid was closed). |

My niece decided that she wanted to try W7. The drivers i used was from the UK, SG and US website. I did a clean install of W7 32bit Pro. I am having problems with the bluetooth though and there seems to be no fingerprint ulitity. I'm not sure if i notice it being any faster as she was running it with Aero theme disabled anyway. There are some W7 drivers on the UK website. That link tmt now goes to page not found.

I have no trouble with the bluetooth, using the stock Windows 7 drivers. There is a download from Fujitsu to add some extra device profiles (stereo headphones, etc) but it's optional.
Have you checked Windows Update? We are all getting the new driver and utility from there, that's why Authentec pulled their beta. It's production now. In another thread I posted the url for the download for the Microsoft servers.
No issue with "mute" for me, and powersave works fine. What versions did you install?

Thanks tmt
For the bluetooth using the vista drivers a compatability error comes up all the time. It can be run but if it works perfectly i am not sure yet. I would like it not to have the compatability message kept on popping up. Something must not be right somewhere.
There is no connection software for the fingeprint reader. I tried Windows update and it found nothing. Edited to add:
I sorted the bluetooth out now i think, i just clicked don't show me this message again.

Don't install the Vista bluetooth stuff, just take the Windows 7 default one. Works great. Add the Fujitsu update for Windows 7 if you need the special profiles. Done.

tmt thanks, i got that driver from the UK website. However, unlike before there is no software to run fingerprint enrolement wizard.
Edited to add: If you want full fuctionality of the fingrerprint readers it seems your best bet is to do an upgrade and update the Ominipass software with the P8020 drivers before you upgrade to W7. That is what Fujistu suggests for this model.
You can buy Ominipass 7 as Ominpass 6 will not install it seems. I just downloaded a trial of O 7 and will see how that will go. If it is not too much i may buy it. I got W7 for free so paying for this might not be so bad.

The update package on the Microsoft update site isn't just a driver, it includes the utility. You can use Omnipass as the utility if you like, but the Authentec one is better, if you just want fingerprint logon and not the extra stuff. There are other utilities than Omnipass too, including upgrades from Authentec. Suit yourself.

Thanks tmt, i spent hours trying to get the finger print working with the Authentec drivers, i tried the two drivers and all i get is a basic thing called finger print sensor in my control panel and something called trueprint. I had no actual software that would allow the passwords to be saved.
What other software other than softex ominpass would you recommend? The latest version that does work with W7 is nearly $50. My neice loves using it and likes the safe to and would scream blue murder if i sent this back and the fingerprint scanner had problems.
I spent from 8am to about 1am working on this thing.
Thanks
Edited to add: I just bought the W7 Ominpass software. It is more than i wanted to spend but she needs it back today and i need to move onto other things. Fujistu didn't make this easy at all and especially not for those whose P8020 models offically support W7. I tried the Protector Suite and could not get that to work.

I recommend the "Authentec Basic" suite in the windows update package I posted. It's free, works flawlessly for login authentication, and doesn't get in the way. Omnipass has some nice features, including using your fingerprint for encrypting files, but I found I never used them. And it was a pain getting it to work with browsers, a bit of a resource hog at times. I'm sure it has improved since version 5 though.
Let us know how it works out!

Thanks tmt, i don't know why i couldn't get it to work. May be some models might have slightly different parts? I don't know. This was a last revision model.
I was also wondering for system cooling do you use passive or active?
Anyway, not to worry, i paid about £32 for Ominipass.
It turns out that i will have this to Wednesday now so i didn't need to work so much on it all at once. At least it is out of the way and a clean install is always good.
W7 is so good that you can adjust how much hard drive space you want system restore to take. I've set it to just over 1Gb.
I think i notice that this laptop is a bit more reponsive.

I use the "Balanced" power profile at its default settings, I find it actually saves more power than "Power Savings" on Win7. On Vista it was the other way around. |

You're dead right on that tmt. I just tried it and the battery life went up. I tweaked the brightness settings after though to improve battery life even more and set min processor usage as 0%.
I was trying to see yesterday what is best for battery life, Aero on or W7 basic theme. I think as you would expect the basic theme gets better battery life or what do you find?

Slightly better battery life with Aero disabled. You do lose a bunch of (frankly) very useful desktop features though. It was a no-brainer with Vista, but with Win7 the thumbnails and icon mouseovers really increase productivity, and the screen loses visual contract in basic video. I actually leave it on, only a few minutes at stake.

BTW, that won't do anything. The min and max are percentages of processor max cpu clock to speedstep down to, since the U2500 can do only between 800 and 1200 MHz, any target below 66% will yield the same clock. Better to reduce the maximum to <66%, this will pin the cpu at 800MHZ. At a performance cost, of course.
